Professional Pathways

Nurturing Welsh or Wales based artists is a core part of our activity here at The Other Room, offering genuine professional pathways for Directors and Producers into the industry.

We want The Other Room to be a theatre where a young artist not only gets their first show - but could potentially run their first building. As a young and ambitious company, The Other Room are dedicated to developing the next generation of Welsh and Wales-based talent and retaining that talent in Wales.

Our professional pathways are aimed at discovering, developing and nurturing emerging Directors and Producers.

For Directors:

Assistant Directors
Each year The Other Room recruits a new assistant director for each show in our spring season. Our assistant directors work closely with world-class creatives offering a distinct starting-point for emerging Welsh and/or Wales based directors. Assistant Directors assist their director with all elements of the production including casting, design, research and rehearsals. Applications for our Assistant Director roles for our next spring season will open in January 2018.

Trainee Director
Our Trainee Director programme provides one former Assistant Director a year the opportunity to work on attachment with us. A 6-8 month contract, Trainee Directors work closely with our team throughout the year to expand their practice and gain insight into the workings of a small-scale venue. They work closely with our Artistic Director and Associate Director in areas such as programming, script-reading, commissioning and on our enrichment activity. There is also a potential for our Trainee to direct a show of their own in our spring season at the end of their tenure. Applications will be open to former Assistant Directors who have worked at The Other Room.  Applications for our Trainee Director role will open in April 2018.

Associate Director
The Associate Director is responsible for running and developing our artistic enrichment activity. A 1-2 year tenure, Associate Directors are core members of our team, who work closely with our Artistic Director and Associate Artistic Director on programming and the development of new-writing. Applications will be open to all former Trainee Directors, and Welsh and/or Wales-based directors with a minimum of 2 years professional experience. Applications for our Associate Director role will open in January 2018.

For Producers:
