Blue Sky Online

Blue Sky is back, and it’s had an upgrade!

Blue Sky Online is The Other Room’s season of creativity, wellbeing and connection in response to the ongoing Covid-19 Crisis.

With our own room firmly off-limits the theatre’s small and dedicated team invite the people of Cardiff and beyond to join us as we look towards the sky. This time of isolation is a time for imagination, for fresh perspectives, for self-care and for big ideas.

For the months of April and May – and perhaps beyond – The Other Room will be delivering three initiatives which will hopefully enrich the lives of our artists, audiences and anyone wanting to connect and participate.

Introducing: TOR Toolkit, Your Room & OpenRoom

TOR Toolbox

Here at The Other Room we envisage an arts scene that does not simply endure and survive, but one that thrives and grows… but how can we grow when we are forced to stand still?

The arts offer us a way to learn, reflect and stay connected to each other. So, now is the time to slow down and be mindful – and we have just the tool.

Presenting TOR Toolbox. Toolbox is a weekly downloadable resource offering you, our audience some useful tools to help withstand these difficult times of isolation. Each download will contain a blog post or interview providing insight into an artistic process, examples of creative activities to keep you stimulated and some tools for wellbeing and staying connected. It’s a small offering in what feels an overwhelming situation, but we hope it will bring a little curiosity and joy, free from the pressure of having to be productive.

Your Room

The Other Room are delighted to reintroduce Your Room – but not as you’ve known it before.

Your Room celebrates the ambition and artistry within Cardiff and beyond. Once a week we’ll be holding #yourroom; a community art club you can take part in in your very own room!

From Wednesday 15th April, we invite you all to get artsy and share your talents in response to a weekly prompt or stimulus. Paint, draw, or dance… Create a piece of visual language, a tune, or poem. Free-write, improvise, design costumes or envision a set – you can respond anyway you want!

We’re looking for as many people as possible to share their ideas with each other! Don’t feel pressured to create a work of genius – this is your room, your art and your opportunity to express yourself.

OpenRoom

OpenRoom is back – and we’re running it online.

Want to get to know our team? Because we want to get to know you. We are opening one-on-one ZOOM meetings every week for creatives from across all theatrical discipline. Whether this is to chat through a creative idea, guidance on career development or to discuss projects on the horizon, we want to hear from you.

We welcome creatives from a wide range of disciplines, including: Actors, Directors, Producers, Writers, Stage Managers, Production Managers, Designers, Lighting Designers, Sound Designers, AV Designers, Illustrators/Animators, Storytellers, Choreographers, Movement Directors, Composers, Theatre Makers and many more.

For more information on how to get involved can be dound by visiting our What's On page.

We're Making Some Changes to SEEN
Mar 9 2022

We're Making Some Changes to SEEN: We’ve had some feedback from our community of artists about our monthly scratch platform, SEEN, and we really valued what they had to say. So, we have decided to throw out the old SEEN rulebook and try something new. Although exciting efforts are well underway, how The Other Room will exist in the future is still unclear. All we know is, The Other Room and Porter’s are a home for brave and bold artists who are passionate about positive change and good nights out. SEEN started as a way of lifting the lid on the writing process, what we want it to be is the gateway for discovering new voices and a platform to testing new ideas. So, we have made some changes to our upcoming SEEN programme, and we will be allowing it to evolve for the rest of the year, so when the next chapter of The Other Room begins in 2023, the hope is that SEEN will be the scratch night that Cardiff needs! To help us do this, we're open to suggestions. Let us know your thoughts, feelings, ideas and vision for what SEEN is and can be. Check out our website for more information on what changes we are making in the short term and to find out how to submit your suggestions: https://www.otherroomtheatre.com/en/get-involved/jobsopportunity/seen/ One Elephant in the room that’s worth addressing is working for free. We know there’s an industry-wide issue with creatives being asked to give their time and talents for free, especially for scratch and rehearsed reading. The difficult truth is, keeping an organisation like The Other Room alive and resourced at the moment is like forcing a square peg into a round hole. We wish we could do more to offer artists fees for SEEN, and in the future, that is our intention. But in the current climate it’s a bit out of our reach. We just wanted to be up-front and honest about that. As a registered charity we will always rely on volunteers, but we know there’s more work to do to ensure that it’s the right people volunteering. You can help us find the right way forward by engaging with the event and sending us your suggestions.
