We are The Other Room…

We are The Other Room. From 2015 we have been Wales’ first and only professional pub theatre - but times have changed and we are in search of a new home…

Pub theatre is still the vision, so, as we search for our next home, we continue to be a producer of intimate and bold plays in spaces where theatre ought not exist across Wales. We support Wales artists to take risks to make distinct and challenging theatre that represents voices of Wales right now.

In 10 years we have supported hundreds of artists and produced and curated 85 productions. We’ve created space for young emerging artists and explored ways of fusing community projects with professional productions, creating opportunities and break down barriers to working in the theatre and arts sector.

We will continue to work constructively with the powers that be to enact change. This way, we can disseminate learning from the ground-up instead of waiting for best- practice to trickle down from the top. We are troops on the ground. We embody the tenacious artists working at the cutting edge of social change.

We are a charity and our projects and productions are supported by Arts Council Wales funding or with the support of local or national organisations and funders.

Our location…

We used to have a permanent home as part of Porter’s Bar in Cardiff, but when the lease came to an end in 2023, we wanted to find a new suitable home for TOR. The last 18 months has allowed us to take out work across Wales, to distinct spaces where stories go hand in hand in the locations where these stories should be told.

In 2023 we worked in partnership with Grand Ambition and performed in Swansea; in 2024 we supported writer Holly Carpenter to create a story about their home town and performed in Port Talbot, DUMPY BISCUIT. Our next production, Orange in the Subway, made in partnership with the homeless charity, The Wallich, will be performed outdoors in Cardiff in September 2025.

New Home…

While bricks and mortar is what need in the long term, in the short term, we will continue to create the work for our community and audiences. We are very close to finding the ideal place to call home.

We have given ourselves 3 years to establish a new venue. We have some exciting options, but as always there is plenty of red tape and money to be found first. So, while we are out on the proverbial streets, we thought we'd bring the stories of the literal streets alive in our next production, and support ways of taking stories to the places they should be told.

    We celebrate difference and disrupt the status quo through creating ambitious theatre and holding the space for alternative stories.

  • MINDFULNESS
    We aim to be aware of larger systemic realities and privilege so that we can help affect and drive change with our work. We want our decisions and choices to be nuanced, responsive and mindful.

    RESILIENCE
    The Other Room only exists because of tenacity, grit, and ambition. But we do so for our audiences, our artists, and the communities we serve.

    OPENNESS
    We strive to acknowledge and prioritise the well-being, safety, personal boundaries, identities, and access needs of everybody that connects with The Other Room.

    TRANSPARENCY
    We seek to be transparent with our audiences and communities - always willing to have authentic dialogue, even when it is challenging and provocative.

    GENEROSITY
    We do not have much, but what we have, we will try to share – our spirit, our space, our time, our resources, our platforms, and opportunities.

Business Plan 2023 - 2027

This new direction for The Other Room is guided by our renewed Vision, Mission and Values; these are the cornerstones to our Business Plan 2023- 2027. This strategy and vision for the future has been created by The Other Room Team and Board of Trustees in response to our Audience Survey (2021) and through conversation with our community of artists and audiences.
